I want to apply for UCAS, what do I do?

Maktab Duli is a recognised UCAS centre. Therefore we strongly advise you to apply for UCAS through us as we will be the one who will provide you with your reference.

However you need to help us to se we can help you.

Step One
Make sure you have completed FORM A and FORM B.
Your Personal Statement needs to be checked by your Higher Education Adviser. It it worthwhile showing this to others as well to ensure you get different perspectives on how you appear in your Personal Statement.

Step Two
Once you have shown Form A, Form B and your Personal Statement to your HEA, she will then give you a BUZZWORD, a list of instructions and you then need to register your name in our record file and fill in the 'Request for Academic Reference' Form.

Step Three
You can now go to UCAS, click 'Apply', and Register under the UCAS system. Once you've entered your details you would need to enter the buzzword in order to register under the College.
Make sure you make note of your LogIn and Password!

Step Four
Enter your details, choices and PS. The final stage would be 'Send to Referee' where you will then have to make a credit card payment of 15pounds. We will check it in our system and if we see any mistakes WE WILL SEND IT BACK TO YOU WITH AN EMAIL TO TELL YOU TO MAKE AMENDMENTS. You will only have to pay once so dont worry about sending it back to us again.

Step Five
In the mean time we will be preparing your reference. Please give us a leeway of a maximum of 2-3 weeks as this is a very busy time for your Advisers. As soon as we send your application you should receive a Welcome letter from UCAS in about 2 weeks. Replies from universities will follow soon after.

Step Six
Please inform your counsellors which universities you have chosen and what path you have taken (UBD, Scholarship, etc). This way we can keep track of your progress as well as see the results from all our hard work!

Therefore make sure you do your research very thoroughly. Come and see your Adviser or make an appointment only after Saturday 7th February 2009.

Didn't get the grades that you wanted?

As with all things, there are times when things don't just pan out the way you want them to.

But it's OK, it's not the end of the world.

If you have Two Cs and above, there's a good chance you can apply for a place to do your FIRST DEGREE at UBD, UNISSA and ITB, depending on your subject combination.

If you have at least ONE A LEVEL PASS (an A level pass is an A-E in any A level subject) look towards doing an HND in ITB or Overseas.

Take note that to do an HND overseas under the MOE scholarship, these are the requirements,
- Brunei Citizen
- 5 ‘O’ Levels including Bahasa Melayu
- ‘O’ Level English Language or IELTS 6.0
- 140 UCAS tariff points in 2 ‘A’ Levels

You can also apply for a scholarship to do a diploma where the requirements are,

- Brunei Citizen
- 6 ‘O’ Levels incl. Bahasa Melayu, Maths and 2 Sciences
- ‘O’ Level English Language or IELTS 6.0
- 80 UCAS tariff points or Grade C in 1 ‘A’ Level

You can retake your subjects in JUNE to boost your grades but please be reminded, Scholarship Unit looks at your grade IN ONE SITTING. You cannot choose your best grades over a period of Nov and June.

Those with 5 O level credits can try applying for a Diploma in Nursing/Midwifery at the Institute of Medicine in UBD.

You can also try looking at what Maktab Teknik Sultan Saiful Rijal has to offer. You need a minimum of 4 O level credits to enter. It's a longer route towards higher education but you will study at a more comfortable pace with a practical hands on approach. Check the HEU notice board for courses available at MTSSR.

Lastly dear students, please do not be discouraged, if there is a will, there is a way. You make your own fortune :)

Your Local Higher Education Options - Part THREE - UBD

The advertisement for courses and entry requiremen will be out very very soon. HOwever the information that you find here are general notes adn tips which you might find useful to know.

UBD will now be offering only four types of degree programmes, namely

  • Bachelor of Arts,
  • Bachelor of Sciences,
  • Bachelor of Health Sciences
  • Bachelor of Business.

All the Education and Malay medium programmes have now been scrapped and are only available as graduate school. If you want to become a teacher you have to take a degree first to become a specialist in your area of interest and only once you graduate do you proceed to do yours Masters In Teaching where you will then be qualified to teach your area of speciality.

These four degree programmes will be part of the New Generation programme where a Discovery Year would be introduced. Students will have the option of taking a year abroad as exposure to life outside of Brunei. More details of this can be found during the STUDY IN UBD expo held in the middle of February or at the UBD ROADSHOW which will be held in Maktab Duli on the 21st of February.

New courses will be available, which are BSc in Physical Education (twinning programme with UWIC) , Bsc in Nursing and Bsc in Midwifery. There will no longer be a certificate in Nursing. However Diploma in Nursing/Midwifery is still available and will require 5 O levels – English, MAths, Science, Malay.

There will still be degree programmes where the medium of instruction will be in Malay. This is under the BA programme where students can take Major in Bahasa Melayu, Minor in Malay linguistics. Career choices are quite limited for this course though. However it is important to note that there must be a credit in English, despite it being a malay medium programme.

Art will be considered as a relevant A level subject, but only for the BA programmes.

Interviews will only be conducted for the more competitive programmes, in this case Bsc Physical Education and entrance to IM courses.

Students must be aware of how important it is that English O level must be a credit in order to attain entry to higher education institutions. This applies even to those who wish to enter Malay Medium degree programmes. If you do not have your ENglish O level yet, your option is to take the IELTS exam. You need a score of 6.0 to enter UBD.

Art/Malay/Syariah/Usuluddin are possible subject combinations for entrance to BA degree programmes but it must be cautioned though that chances for employment are quite challenging for those who choose these subjects. It is best that those with these subjects look at KUPUSB instead. Take note that entry is competitve as they only have a limited intake each year and they are looking for those who genuinely want to become religious education teachers.

Lastly, Students should be aware that the advantage of studying at UBD rather than overseas would be that you will not be bonded at the end of the course.

Dont forget, STUDY IN UBD - 12-15th February.

Instructions on how to apply through this system will be out very soon so watch this space.

So what do you do now?

What you need to do now is to look out for advertisements on courses available at UBD, UNISSA, ITB for the local higher education institutions.

If you want to apply to do a course in a UK university, you will need to apply via UCAS. In order to enter the UCAS system, you will need a buzzword from the HEU. Before we can give you the buzzword you must show us a good personal statement and do your research on the universities and courses you want to apply to. Form A and Form B done during VISION will be needed here.

If you want to apply for HND and DIPLOMA through the Scholarship Unit in MOE you will need to go to MOE to collect the paper form to be filled and handed in before the 28th of February.

Those wanting to apply to KUPUSB can go to the College University to pick up the forms as soon as the advertisement for courses comes out.

Once again, HEU is closed from 31st January - 5th February. Consultations with your Higher Education Advisers as well as the buzzword can only be obtained on SATURDAY 7th FEBRUARY 2009.

We will update you very soon with more details of the HECAS system. Till then, do your research carefully.
