Meet Your Higher Education Adviser
Upper sixth students are currently seeing their HE Advisers to discuss their VISION Progress.
Their HEA are to discuss with them their research findings on courses and universities. In addition, they also get help with their Personal Statement and Plan of Study (which is normally drafted and completed after receiving the A Level result).
How can VISION help these students?
When their A Level results are released next year in January 2009, they shall not need to panic as they have considered their options either for higher education or employment for 2009. All students need to do next year is get their result slip, obtain the relevant forms i.e. scholarships, UBD,ITB and etc. , and then complete and submit the forms. They can use the personal statement and plan of study that we are helping them with at the moment.
So meet your HEA and avoid the panic attack in January next year :)

Thank You and Not to Worry
For a start, we managed to get 68% attendance from the Upper Sixth students. This however is still not inclusive of the students who have no PS block and those students who 'missed' our sessions (we shall arrange for additional sessions soon for them)
For those who missed the chance to attend the sessions, please register with the HEU Cadets in your AE Group and we shall arrange additional sessions for you.
Here are some pictures taken during the sessions.
It was full attendance to most of the sessions during the 2 days, this student had to sit outside listening to the counsellor explaining about VISION. We were fortunate we had a microphone/speaker of our own, to make the briefing more effective for the students.
But we shall try to arrange for bigger settings next time. The only challenge we faced last year when we used the auditorium was that as there were too many students in the briefing, quite often the sessions became less effective with too much noise. With smaller groups, although quite exhausting, we found it more effective. Nevertheless we are open to suggestions, feel free to see us at HEU or email us with your recommendations on VISION.
Bags were left outside the HEU resource room as HEU was simply packed with students attending VISION.

VISION 2009 Briefing
Today marks the end of the briefing sessions for VISION 2009 which took place at HEU for two days. We shall arrange for additional briefing sessions to students who do not have PS blocks. And should you have queries regarding VISION please come and see us, make appointments if you cant meet us due to our teaching responsibilities or email us with your questions.
Try not to worry too much although as you can see theres quite a lot that you need to do for research. BUT consider yourself lucky as VISION is here to help so you wont panic next year when you get your results in February.

KEY TO TARIFF POINTS FOR UCAS
For A Levels : | AS Levels |
A = 120 points | A=60 |

Research forms for VISION :http://www.savefile.com/files/1539672
By having goals, students will know their future directions and no longer have to struggle once they have their A level results.
In addition, Vision Projects also acts as a strategy to improve the academic achievements of the students.
Once they realise their skills and interest for their particular course, and knowing which universities/institutions they would want to go to, they should be motivated to achieve better grades to meet the requirements of their course they aspire to apply next year.
VISION includes :
· Exploration - What Your Options Are, Where You Want To Be
· Planning - How You’re Going To Get There
· Action - Doing It and Getting There
· Experience - Learning and Achieving
WHY DO YOU NEED TO BE REGISTERED FOR VISION ?
Higher Education Unit has piloted this project last year. As a result students who were registered with VISION were able to SECURE GOOD COURSES AND GOOD UNIVERSITIES (because they prepared EARLIER !) once they get their A level results in February.
For 2009 – students who have NOT done VISION with us (in 2008) WILL HAVE TO WAIT TILL MARCH 2009 (Late applications) as HEU shall close all applications and requirements for Personal Statement, Plan of Study and etc by January and February 2009. In fact once the results are released next year , HEU shall be closed for full time Lower Sixth Admission consultation at the auditorium.
SO PAY ATTENTION TO YOUR FUTURE IN 2009
AND BE WITH US IN VISION
P.S. : If you don’t have a VISION for yourself,
YOU SHOULD BE CONCERNED
and let us HELP YOU make a VISION for YOUR future.

VISION is a Strategy for Sucess. It includes a number of independent research tasks and several decision making that needs to be done by the students.

Before the Term Ends...
on Thursday afternoon, 13th March we met up with the representative from the University of Edinburgh who was kind enough to let us know what are the benefits of a scottish degree as well as a brief idea of the sights and sound of Edinburgh (Did you know that the author of Harry Potter, JK Rowling, went to Edinburgh University? :))
The next day Ck. Pg Hjh Mashayu was invited by the Hostel Unit to give a talk to the AE and BE Hostellites. This was done on Friday, 14th March at the College Auditorium.
The talk went very well and the hostellites were well mannered, attentive, enthused, inspired and also full of questions - our kind of audience! :)
And lastly, on Monday 17th march we had a representative from the University of Kent explain to us about Actuarial Science (which is a course offered on the Scholarship list) and then give us an idea of what the University has to offer. It was interesting to note that there are about 65 Bruneians studying in Kent! Basically we learnt that you need at least ABB in order to do Actuarial Science in Kent with Maths being your best subject.
A snapshot of students at the talk interested in broadening their horizons ;)
Have a good break!
UCAS Training at PTE Berakas
On Thursday, 13th of March, counsellors from HEU were invited to attend a UCAS briefing on writing Personal Statements and References from a representative of UCAS.
The information that we received was quite useful as the representative gave reminders and tips on what needs to be remembered by the students. Basically it's important for students to establish and identify their KEY SKILLS which are RELEVANT TO THE COURSE and then include WHAT HAVE YOU DONE to illustrate that you have this skill.
She also mentioned that it's worth checking out www.Unistats.com to have a better idea of the University that students are thinking of applying to and what are the chances of being accepted.
HEU would like to extend our gratitude and appreciation to the Careers Unit at PTE Berakas for inviting us to the event. It was a great chance to meet and network with other counsellors and Higher Education Consultants.
